John graduated from Ball State University, Muncie Indiana in 1978 with a Bachelors degree in Social Work and General Psychology and spent the following, almost 20 years, pursuing that career. Somewhere along the way he started the search for what he really wanted to do when he grew up and massage therapy was the answer that he came to. John had always enjoyed being the person who knew how to rub someone’s shoulders or head in order to get rid of their headache or pain and found it fascinating the more he learned about the body and how to help people feel more comfortable in theirs. John decided to take his passion for bodywork and make it a career.
Graduating from IUPUI’s (Indiana University Purdue University in Indianapolis’s) 500 hour certification course in 1995 he began working at the National Institute for Fitness and Sport (NIFS) which he continued for 10 years. During that time John was lucky to have been exposed to many different types of individuals with many types of needs. This ranged from the everyday individual who wanted relaxation, or work on a specific muscle strain or discomfort, to professional athletes playing on the national and international stage.
Through this process he has grown an even deeper appreciation for the amazing machine that our body is and he tries to understand the “why” and “how” of its workings. This has lead him to a style that combines the basic relaxing Swedish moves and the deeper, more penetrating techniques of sports and deep tissue massage. John likes to help the client come to a better understanding of their body or injury in hopes of helping them be more conscious of themselves in place and time. John continues this exploration of the amazing machine that we call home at Healing Arts Indy.
